Have you heard about the historical place called the Colosseum?
Yes, I have! It's one of the most famous landmarks in Rome, Italy.
What's so interesting about it?
It was built in the 1st century AD as an amphitheater for gladiatorial contests. It could hold up to 80,000 spectators!
That's amazing! I'm going to have to add that to my list of places to visit.
You definitely should! It's a truly awe-inspiring sight.
What else can you tell me about it?
The Colosseum was in use for over 400 years, until the early 5th century AD. After that, it fell into disrepair and was eventually abandoned.
What happened to it then?
In the Middle Ages, it was used as a quarry for building materials. Many of its stones were taken away to be used in other structures.
That's a shame.
It is, but even in its ruined state, the Colosseum is still a very impressive monument. It's a reminder of the power and glory of the Roman Empire.
I can't wait to see it for myself!
I'm sure you'll be amazed.
